Rumie Byte Creation
I volunteered for Rumie as a Learning Designer, creating Bytes over a 6 month period. Bytes are bite-sized learning experiences that are as accessible, easy, and fun as social media. Below I take you through the process I use to write and design a Byte.
My Bytes can be viewed here.
Writing Bytes
Each learning Byte is written in a way that is approachable, consumable, and focused.
Approachability is achieved by mimicking social media, content is: friendly and conversational, short, and uses plain language (no fancy jargon!).
Information is consumable, each section is 3-5 sentences and contains at least one piece of media per content step. There are no big walls of text.
Focus is maintained by tying everything back to an underlying learning objective (LO).
Designing Bytes
Strong visuals help learners remember information with greater accuracy, for longer. Each learning Byte is designed in a way that supports visual balance, see-say, relevance, and accessibility.
Visual balance between text and media is achieved by including at least one media element per content step.
See-Say works to match the words and visuals. Adding a visual for the sake of it is avoided.
The media and content always have a clear connection to the content to support the learning objective.
Accessibility is supported by using alt text, visual hierarchy styling in headers, subheaders and body text, avoiding long blocks of text, and considering photosentistiy.
Revising Bytes
Each Byte has undergone a peer review. Peer reviews have improved my learning design skills and allowed me to create better experiences for learners. While my Bytes are being reviewed I review other designers Bytes and offer them constructive feedback on structure and content. Reviews are completed using ClickUp.
